During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Turning Point cites the need for more community partners
Mount Clemens, Mich. – October 22, 2026 –October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In a single day study conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence in the state of Michigan, 2,980 domestic violence victims reach out for support. Turning Point—an agency whose mission is to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence—utilizes every available platform to educate and help eradicate domestic violence in the community.
That mission starts with deep partnerships in the community, according to Turning Point CEO Sharman Davenport, Ph.D.
“Particularly in recent years, and with intention, Turning Point has prioritized strengthening its visibility and partnerships throughout the greater Macomb County community,” Davenport said. “It’s never been clearer that our services are critical to Macomb County. We serve over 27,000 survivors and community members annually. We are a 24/7 agency standing by to help survivors—and community members—whenever they need us.”
Relationships with community partners, including public safety and the courts, have proven to be important and impactful. In 2025, Turning Point expanded its collaboration with the Warren Police Department through Operation Cycle Break to better respond to domestic violence calls. The program has seen an increased issuance of warrants in domestic violence cases and improved success rates in victim follow-up, among other significant progress.
Additionally, Turning Point maintains an office within the 16th Circuit Court to assist survivors with personal protection orders (PPOs) and legal advocacy. This crucial presence allows the clients Turning Point serves to put the necessary protections and support in place as survivors navigate the stress and uncertainty of legal proceedings.
Turning Point has also developed strong relationships with fellow nonprofits that support its mission. Most recently, Turning Point and the Anton Art Center teamed up to display the Wishes on the Wind art gallery. The exhibit, which is on display until October 14, features a large kite with survivor messages as the tails, alongside artwork created by survivors in the art therapy program offered to Turning Point clients by the Anton Art Center.
Generous support from other foundations and groups like the McGregor Fund, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the Rotary Club of Mount Clemens, and the Hearts for Hope Foundation, among others, has made meaningful contributions to support Turning Point’s mission this year—but more help is urgently needed.
“Continuing our important community work means we need more—and deeper—mutually beneficial partnerships and supporters to ensure that greater Macomb County remains a safe place to live and work,” Davenport noted. “I think that’s a goal we can all agree on.”
