De-escalation Techniques for Healthcare Professionals:
Enhancing Safety and Therapeutic Care
(1.0 Contact hour for Nurses, Social Workers and Case Managers)
Course Description: This presentation equips healthcare professionals with evidence based
strategies to effectively de-escalate high-stress situations in healthcare settings,
helping prevent conflict and reduce the risk of harm to patients and staff. Participants
will explore the psychological and physiological drivers of escalation, learn how to use
verbal and non-verbal communication to build trust and diffuse aggression, recognize
early warning signs of crisis, and apply practical de-escalation techniques such as active
listening, empathy, boundary setting, and redirection.
